The Clatsop County Historical Society is an organization which strives to preserve the history of Clatsop County in Astoria, OR. Within the Clatsop County Historical Society are three distinct museums and an Archives and Research Center, housed in historically significant buildings. Each of these museums is dedicated to retelling the history of the county, and while preserving the buildings to promote the importance of knowing where these museums come from. The design of each museum, as well as the history behind it, is very important in relaying the significance of each building, ensuring an exciting educational experience for everyone visiting!
About The Clatsop County Historical Society
The Clatsop County Historical Society has three museums you can tour to learn more about the history of Clatsop County: the Flavel House Museum, Heritage Museum, and Uppertown Firefighters Museum. There is also an Archives and Research Center located in the Heritage Museum.
The Flavel House Museum is located within a building themed after the Queen Anne architecture style that was built for Captain George Flavel in 1884; the museum focuses on the history of the Flavel family and their effect on the community, as well as the uses of the house throughout the years. The Flavel House Museum is open from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. daily, October through April. May through September the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
The Heritage Museum is located in the Old City Hall building, which was built in 1904, focuses on the local history of Clatsop County, and also contains the Archive and Research Center. The Heritage Museum is open from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, October through April. May through September the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
The Uppertown Firefighter’s Museum contains firefighting equipment dating as far back as 1877, and preserves the history of firefighters within Clatsop County; the museum building was constructed in 1896 as a brewery, but later on, was renovated into a fire station after the brewery closed.
